Q. North and South Korean sports players appeared together with the flag of unified Korean peninsula during the opening ceremony after 11 years. What was the part that you particularly paid attention for this scene?

Q. 11년만에 남북선수단이 같이 한반도기를 들고 등장하는 모습을 보고 굉장히 뭉클했습니다. 단일팀 등장에 가장 신경 쓴 부분은 무엇인가요?

<송승환 / 평창동계올림픽 총감독>
It was an official event, so there wasn’t much room for artistic direction. But my team did pick the music. It was so cold that day, and people can feel even colder when they’re not moving. So I edited K-pop music to sound more like EDM so that people could stand up, dance, clap hands, and beat small drums when the players entered. For the entrance of the joint South-North Korean team, we edited Arirang, a song well-known to both Koreas, into EDM. I think my team is the first to make such a move at the Olympics. It was designed to maintain both the significant meaning of the joint team and the upbeat vibe.

Thankfully, responses from foreign media outlets were positive. In particular, they took note that we successfully prepared the opening and closing ceremonies with such a low budget.

뭐 그 부분은 공식행사기 때문에 저희가 문화적으로 어떤 연출을 하거나 개입할 수 있는 부분은 아니죠. 하지만 그 배경음악은 저희가 신경을 썼죠. 사실을 이번 개회식에서는 굉장히 추웠기 때문에 현장이. 그 추운곳에 관객여러분들이 계속 앉아계시면 너무 춥잖아요. 그래서 선수들이 입장할 때 같이 일어나서 춤도 추고 또 박수도 또 치고 저희가 나눠드린 작은 북도 치는. 그런 의미에서 제가 k-pop을 다 edm으로 일렉트로닉댄스뮤직으로 편곡을 했죠. 그런데 우리나라 한국선수들과 또 북한선수들이 단일팀으로 들어올 때는 남북이 서로 잘 알고있는 노래. 결국 아리랑을 좀 edm으로 편곡을 해서 배경음악으로 썼어요. 아마 아리랑을 edm으로 편곡해서 그렇게 올림픽에서 쓰는건 저희가 처음인 것 같고요. 그 흥겨운 분위기도 유지하면서 또 남북 단일팀의 의미도 살리기 위해서 우리의 아리랑을 edm으로 편곡했죠.

다행이 외신들도 굉장히 좋은 반응을 보여줬고요. 아무래도 저희가 적은 예산을 가지고 이런 개폐회식 무대를 꾸민거에 대해서 외국 언론들도 좋은 칭찬을 많이 해줬어요.

Q. The role of the five children was an important part of the overall concept of the opening ceremony. How did you get to cast them?

Q. 5명의 아이들의 역할이 개회식 전체 컨셉에 중요한 부분을 차지했는데. 어떻게 캐스팅을 하게 되셨나요?

There were so many scenes the kids had to appear in and important acting they needed to do, so we had an audition with child actors. There are many child actors in South Korea because we have a vibrant drama industry. We selected kids through the audition that fit into the characters in our minds, and an acting coach joined us to direct them.

The five colors of the clothes the kids wore are in the traditional color scheme of Korea. We wanted to use the colors to convey a message from the Korean philosophy of harmony.

제 스토리에서는 강원도 아이들이지만 워낙 그 아이들이 출연해야 될 영상도 많고, 또 아이들이 해야될 중요한 연기가 많기 때문에 저희가 아역 배우들을 대상으로 오디션을 했어요. 우리나라에 그 드라마가 워낙 많이 발전해서 우리나라는 아역 배우들이 굉장히 많거든요. 그 아역배우들 중에서 우리가 원하는 캐릭터에 맞는 그런 배우들을 오디션을 통해서 선발을 했고, 또 그 아역들에게는 저희 연기 지도선생님이 한분이 붙어서 한 씬 한 씬 연기를 지도하면서 그렇게 작업을 했죠.

(아이들의 의상은) 한국 전통의 오방색에서 따왔어요. 그 대한민국이 갖고 있는 음양오행의 동양 철학, 또 대한민국 고유의 색인 오방색 이제 이런 것에서 의미를 가져왔죠.
