Q. Let’s elaborate more about the ceremonies. Starting from the opening. The concept of the opening ceremony was about the five children going on an adventure for peace. Can you explain more about this concept?

Q. 개회식부터 상세하게 짚어보려고 합니다. 개회식의 컨셉이 다섯아이들이 평화를 찾아 떠나는 내용이었는데요. 왜 다섯 아이들이었는지- 그 의미를 다시 한번 짚어볼 수 있을까요?

The Opening Ceremony is not merely about cultural performances. There are many official events included, so it’s not easy to keep the storyline consistent. Yet, I wanted to weave a common thread through the ceremony. To me, adventures of five kids from Gangwon Province served as that connection to link Korea’s past, present, and future. The kids finding a treasure map and setting off on a journey provided the canvas upon which the story of Korea’s past to future could be drawn, introducing the history and culture of Korea.

The human-faced bird also appeared to describe a peaceful nation where the sky, land, people, nature, and animals co-exist in harmony. The image of a dove made with candles in the later part was also meant to send a message of peace. Then the dove flew off to make drone Olympic rings.

올림픽 개회식이 단순히 문화 공연들만 있는게 아니라 중간중간에 많은 공식 행사들이 있어서 스토리를 이어가기가 굉장히 쉽지 않아요. 그럼에도 불구하고 뭔가 연결된 흐름이 있으면 좋겠다는 생각을 했고, 그래서 강원도에 다섯 어린이들의 모험이라는 그런 스토리를 가지고 한국의 과거, 현재, 미래를 이어가는. 그런 줄거리를 생각한거죠. 그래서 다섯 아이들이 처음에 보물지도를 발견하고 그리고 모험을 떠나고, 그래서 한국의 과거에서부터 미래까지 그 여행을 통해서 한국의 역사와 문화를 소개하는 그런 플롯을 짜게 됐습니다.

처음에 인면조가 등장한 것도 하늘과 땅과 사람과 천지인 또 자연과 동물과 인간이 어울리는 그런 평화로운 땅을 표현하고 싶었고요. 또 후반에도 우리가 평화의 메시지를 전달하기 위해서 비둘기를 촛불로 비둘기를 만들고, 또 그 비둘기가 날아가서 드론 오륜이 되고.

Q. It was very impressive that the kids travel back in time to Koryo which is a period known for a long term of peace in the Korean history. It was especially touching for me because I understand the history of Korea. On the other hand, it might have been difficult for the international viewers to understand this part. What were some of the solutions that you came up with to deliver the message of peace to the world?

Q. 평화로웠던 고려의 땅을 찾고 그곳에서 세상이 평화로울 때 나타난다는 인면조까지 등장하는 게 굉장히 감동적이고 인상적이었는데요. 한국인으로서 그 역사를 이해했기 때문이었던 것 같습니다. 우리나라 역사를 모르는 세계인들은 이해하기 어려웠을 수도 있을 것 같은데요. 평화 메시지를 세계인들에게 잘 전달하기 위해서 어떤 고민들을 하셨나요?

The Olympics are a festival for everyone, no matter where the event is being held. Therefore, global commonalities matter. I thought the tomb murals of the Koryo period expressed that, as many of the murals depict imaginary animals. I believed that the sense of fantasy delivered by imaginary animals including the human-faced bird can be felt by people from all over the world, and that such a sense of fantasy provides an effective means to deliver the message of peace. It is part of Korean history, something even foreigners can relate with.

올림픽은 한국에서 한 올림픽이지만 그러나 전 세계인의 축제기 때문에 그런 글로벌한 보편성이 굉장히 중요하죠. 아 물론 한국의 고구려의 고분벽화에서 시작했지만, 그러나 저는 글로벌한 보편성이 있다고 생각했어요. 왜냐면 고구려 고분벽화안에는 상상속의 동물들이 많이 있거든요. 그런 뭐 인면조를 비롯한 많은 상상속의 동물들이 어떤 판타지를 외국 사람들한테도 그렇게 할 것이라 생각했고요. 또 제가 하고자 하는 평화라는 메시지가 그런 환타지 속에서 잘 전달될 수 있다고 생각해서. 우리 역사지만 외국인들도 공감할 수 있다고 생각했죠.
