Q. After the entrance of the Olympics athletes during the closing ceremony, a great scenery of drones drawing a heart and the mascot of PyeonChang Olympics was created. How was this possible?

Q. 선수단 입장 이후 드론으로 수호랑 위에 하트가 그려지는 명장면이 연출됐는데요. 경이롭다는 평가가 나올 정도로 평가가 굉장히 좋았습니다. 어떻게 가능했던건가요?

The drone Olympic rings garnered a lot of positive responses after the opening ceremony. However, drones can’t fly when it’s too windy, so we had to videotape the scene in advance. But I wanted to show the real scene at the closing ceremony. There were many concerns about all the wind, snow, and fog but thankfully the weather conditions were great on the day. The wind speed fell to below 1 meter per second. So we could shape Suhorang and the heart safely with drones. The drone scene followed the athletes’ entrance, so we planned it to look like Suhorang presenting the heart to all the athletes in recognition of their hard work. We were hoping that memories from PyeongChang will last long in the hearts of the players.

Regarding animation, we had discussions with our creators over what image to make, how it will change, how long it will take, and what colors to use. Creators and the drone team spent a lot of time in discussion. Then, once the plan was finalized, a single person operated the set program.

개회식 때 워낙 저희가 드론으로 만든 오륜이 반응이 좋았죠. 그런데 다만 현지 사정 때문에 바람이 워낙 많은 지역이어서 드론은 바람이 많이 불면 띄울 수가 없거든요. 그래서 어쩔 수 없이 녹화를 해서 방송을 했었는데. 폐회식에서는 실제로 스타디움에서 그걸 보여드리고 싶었어요. 근데 평창이 워낙 바람이 많고, 또 눈도 오고, 또 안개도 끼고 그래서 과연 현장에서 가능할 것인가 굉장히 우려를 많이 했는데. 다행이도 폐회식 당일날 날씨가 너무 좋았고, 또 바람도 초속 1m 이하로 떨어지고. 그래서 저희가 안전하게 드론을 이용해서 수호랑과 하트를 만들 수 있었죠. 선수기간 입장이 끝난 다음에 그 프로그램을 계획했거든요 그래서 수고한 모든 선수들에게 우리 마스코트인 수호랑이 하트를 선물하는 폐회식으로. 경기는 끝났지만 여러분 가슴에 이 평창이 오랫동안 남아있기를, 사랑으로 남아있기를 바라는 그런 마음으로 애니메이션을 했습니다.

그 애니메이션 과정에서는 저희 크리에이터들과 의논을 하죠. 어떤 그림을 만들 것인지, 어떻게 변화할 것인지, 시간은 얼마나 걸릴 것인지, 칼라는 무엇으로 할 것인지 그런 여러 가지를 저희 크리에이터들과 또 드론팀이 같이 회의를 했고요. 최종적으로 그 프로그램을 만들고 나면은 그건 한사람에 의해서 그 프로그램이 작동을 합니다.

Q. At the closing ceremony, a doll called "Mokudo" appeared to commemorate the death. What was the purpose of this scene?

Q. 폐회식때 죽음을 추모하는 인형 ‘꼭두’가 등장했는데, 어떤 의미에서 였나요?

From the Rio Olympics, an official event called Remember Protocol became a part of closing ceremonies. Even during a positive event like the Olympics, there can be people who are injured or who die. The Remember Protocol is an opportunity to commemorate these individuals. But I thought an abrupt minute of silence amid the closing ceremony would make the atmosphere too serious. The IOC wanted my team to turn the commemoration into a performance. So we used a traditional puppet that’s believed to connect the death and the world, along with a march of a bier (bee-ah), and also a turtle, a symbol of eternity, in our way of commemoration.

지난 리우 올림픽 때부터 IOC에서 폐회식에 리멤버 프로토콜이라는 공식행사를 마련했어요. 그 얘기는 폐회식을 끝으로 올림픽이 끝나고 굉장히 축제분위기로 마무리가 되긴 하지만 올림픽 기간 중에 뭐 다친 사람도 있을 수 있고, 또 생명을 잃은 사람도 있을 수 있죠. 그런 사람들에 대한 추모의 시간을 잠깐 갖자는 의미가 리멤버 프로토콜이에요. 그런데 그걸 그냥 갑자기 그 폐회식장에서 모든 사람에게 1분간 묵념하는건 너무 딱딱하잖아요. 그런 그 추모를 공연화시켜줬으면 좋겠다라는게 IOC의 요구였어요. 그래서 저희는 죽음과 세상을 연결하는 그런 꼭두, 우리 전통 꼭두를 등장시키고 우리 상여가 나가는 행렬을 등장시키고, 그리고 거북이라는 우리의 영생의 동물을 등장시켜서 그 리멤버의 추모의 의미를 그렇게 표현을 한거죠.

Q The scene called “Axis of Image” was incredible with the dance, video and music harmonizing. What was the most difficult part of implementing this scene?

Q. 새로운 시간의 축 영상은, 무용-영상-음악이 정말 멋스럽게 조화를 이룬 장면이었던 것 같습니다. 한 장면 장면을 구현해 낼 때 어떤 부분이 가장 어려웠나요? 그리고 이런 장면들은 어떤 고뇌의 과정을 통해서 탄생하는지도 궁금합니다.

There were many difficulties. In particular, we had a very limited budget so we had to give up on some ideas. There were differences of opinion among artists as well. Even with a shared concept, different artists sometimes have different approaches. I had to mediate sometimes. And also the weather. It was so cold and the strong wind prevented us from carrying out rehearsals as planned. Those were the difficulties I faced.

뭐 어려운 점이 많이 있죠. 우선 우리는 굉장히 적은 예산으로 올림픽을 시도해야 했기 때문에 사실 더 많은 아이디어들이 있었지만 예산 때문에 포기하는 것도 많았구요. 또 예술가들끼리 의견이 늘 일치하지는 않아요. 컨셉은 같이 공유했지만 표현 방법은 또 예술가들끼리 서로 다를 수 있기 때문에 총감독으로서 이제 그런 의견을 조율하는 것. 이런 일들도 쉽지는 않았고. 또 무엇보다도 그걸 실행하는 단계에서는 날씨가 워낙 춥고, 또 그 바람이 또 그 평창은 굉장히 심한 지역이어서 우리가 예정한대로 리허설 하기가 힘들었어요. 그런 점들이 굉장히 어려운 점이었죠.
