아침 출근길, 가스불은 껐는지, 문은 제대로 닫았는지 가물 가물할 때가 있죠? 하지만 이제 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 클릭 한 번이면 온갖 기기와 생활 용품를 제어할 수 있고 그 기기들이 알아서 내 삶을 관리해주기도 하니까요. 급속도로 성장하고 있는 IOT 기술, 그리고 이를 가능하게 하는 5세대 통신 기술의 발전상을 최진석 기자가 취재했습니다.



요즘 모바일 기기는 벨이 울리는 경우도 다양합니다. 전화뿐 아니라 메시지 알림, 경고음까지. 이제는 아이 돌보는 일을 도와주는 고마운 알람도 등장했는데요. 이른바 ‘스마트 기저귀’는 센서를 이용해 아이의 온도와 습도를 감지해, 데이터를 엄마의 스마트폰에 자동으로 전송해 줍니다.

스마트 센서가 아기의 대소변은 물론이고 체온을 체크해 건강 상태를 비교 분석해 주는 기기도 있습니다. 이 모든 것을 가능케 하는 것이 바로 ‘사물인터넷(IOT)'입니다. 정보통신기술을 기반으로 사물과 사물, 또는 사물과 사람을 연결해 데이터를 수집 및 교환할 수 있게 해주는 기술인데요. 전 세계 사물인터넷 시장은 빠르게 대중화되고 있습니다. 국내 시장 역시 지난해 30%나 성장했습니다.


                                  
부엌도 예외는 아닙니다. 집안에서 고기를 구울 때, 스마트폰을 통해 공기 상태를 수치로 확인하고 공기 청정기를 작동시킬 수 있게 된 겁니다.

냉장고 역시 사물인터넷과 결합해 하루가 다르게 똑똑해지고 있는데요. 이 삼성냉장고에 달린 22인치 모니터의 용도는 무엇일까요? 냉장고 문을 열지 않아도 냉장고에 보관중인 재료와 상태가 그대로 표시되고, 떨어진 재료를 확인해 인터넷으로 곧 바로 주문할 수도 있습니다. 휴대전화와 메모를 주고받는 것도 문제없습니다.

‘거울아! 거울아! 세상에서 누가 제일 예쁘니?’ 백설공주 동화에 나오는 왕비의 요술 거울이 현실에도 등장했습니다. 사물인터넷 기술을 넣어 LG와 가구업체 한샘이 만든 ‘매직미러’ 인데요. 거울 뒤에 부착된 특수 카메라가 피부 상태를 체크한 뒤, 관리 솔루션을 제공해줍니다.

거울에서부터 냉장고, 기저귀, 세탁기, 식기세척기에 TV까지. 생활 가전에 통신이 결합하는 것은 이미 자연스러운 일이 되었습니다. 그 외에도 자동차와 자전거, 운동기구, 장갑, 핸드백 같은 생활 용품과 통신이 결합한 다양한 아이디어 상품들이 속속 등장하고 있습니다.

사물인터넷의 발달과 함께, 통신 인프라의 중요성도 높아지고 있습니다.

올 2월에 열린 세계 최대 규모의 모바일 전시회, MWC 2016의 화두 역시, 차세대 이동통신, ‘5G’기술이었는데요. SK텔레콤은 현장에서 기존 LTE(75Mbps)보다 약 270배 빠른 20.5Gbps 속도의 데이터 전송에 성공해 이목을 끌었습니다. 이는 UHD 영화 한 편(20GB)을 약 8초 만에 전송할 수 있는 속도입니다.

세계 각국은 2020년까지 5G의 표준화를 목표로 국제 표준 규격을 만들어가는 중입니다. 5G는 사물인터넷과 가상현실(VR) 등 미래 산업에 근간이 될 인프라이기에, 주도권을 차지하기 위한 경쟁도 뜨겁습니다.
                                     
한국은 국제 표준보다 한 발 앞서, 5G 성공 모델을 제시하기 위해 속도를 내고 있습니다. 2018년 평창 동계 올림픽에서 세계 최초 5G 통신과 방송 중계 서비스를 제공하겠다는 전략입니다.

세계 사물인터넷 시장은 2022년까지 연평균 21.8% 이상 성장하리란 전망입니다. 또, 시장조사기관 IC인사이츠의 분석에 따르면 5 년 뒤인 2020년, 인터넷으로 연결되는 디바이스의 수가 무려 300 억 개에 달할 것으로 보입니다. 5G 등 관련 기술을 선도하려는 경쟁이 그 어느 때보다도 치열할 것으로 보이는 이유인데요. 하지만 전문가들은 그럴수록 협력이 중요하다는 입장입니다.

‘얼마나 다양하고 폭넓게 연결을 확장할 것인가’ 는 사물인터넷 시장의 중요한 경쟁력이 될 수밖에 없습니다. 최근, 국내 대기업들이 앞 다퉈 중소기업에 플랫폼을 오픈하고, 교류와 협력에 힘쓰는 것도 바로 이 때문인데요.

미래가 아닌 현실로 다가온, 사물인터넷을 기반으로 한 초연결사회(Hyper Connected Society)의 공습. 하지만 동시에 다양한 기회도 생겨나고 있습니다. 우리 모두가 경쟁자인 동시에 동반자임을 명심하며 새로운 시대를 맞이할 때입니다.

These days, mobile devices ring for any number of reasons. Calls, messages, alerts. Some can help parents to better care for their babies.

Smart diapers are embedded with interactive sensors that measure an infant’s temperature and moisture. The data is then automatically sent to a caregiver’s smart phone.

Other wearable devices can monitor irregularities in an infant's urine and temperature over time and alert parents if they need to visit a doctor.

It’s all part of the Internet of Things (IOT). The network of physical objects embedded with sensors and other technology allowing them to collect and exchange data. The IOT market is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. In South Korea it grew by 30% last year.

You can see that growth in the kitchen. Cook a roast…and get air quality alerts sent to your smart phone. Then use the device to switch on an air purifier.

Fridges are getting smarter, too. This one by Samsung has a 22-inch touch screen on the outside. Inside, a set of cameras is keeping tabs. Letting you know when you need more milk or eggs. The fridge even allows you to order groceries and have them delivered. And, you can write memos on the touchscreen and send them to your smart phone.

Get ready for the "mirror, mirror on the wall" to reflect much more. This “Magic Mirror” developed by LG and home interior furniture maker Hanssem can do as much as your computer or smartphone. It uses a special camera embedded in the back to analyze your skin conditions and offer tips.

From mirrors, fridges and diapers to washing machines, dishwashers, and TVs the Internet of Things continues to grow. Cars, bikes, exercise equipment, gloves, handbags, and more are being connected to networks around the world.

[Hyeong-hee Lee / Chairman of Korea IOT Association : Just as the internet and mobile brought huge changes to our lives, the IOT will provide momentum for a revolution. IOT technology is applied to virtually every area. And it’s expected to make consumers’ lives more convenient and improve industry productivity and stability.]

But with billions of connected devices in use and counting the IOT won’t work without a strong backbone of advanced communications infrastructure.

Enter 5G networks. This level of connectivity was one of the stars of the Mobile World Congress in February. South Korea’s SK Telecom successfully demonstrated an over the air transmission speeds of 20.5 gigabits per second. That’s 270 times faster than LTE. At that rate, an ultra-high definition movie of about 20GB can be sent in just 8 seconds.

Countries everywhere are increasing efforts to promote 5G global standards by 2020. International competition is heating up to take the lead in the 5G market, which is expected to support future industries including the Internet of Things and Virtual Reality.

South Korean companies are trying to stay ahead of the curve. They’re working hard to launch communication and broadcasting services based on 5G networks. And they’re promising a debut in time for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.

According to Machina, the global IOT market is expected to grow at a rate of nearly 22 percent through 2022. Another research firm IC Insights estimates the number of connected devices will rise to as many as 30 billion by 2020. So, even more reason to fight for pole position in the 5G race. But experts say cooperation will be crucial.

We provide different platform types, but also need entrepreneur and creative startup ideas. The combination of these can create huge business opportunities.]

In the global IOT market, openness to diversity and expansion of connectivity are two of the most important keys to success. That’s why large companies in South Korea are rushing to open their platforms to small and medium-sized enterprises and promote cooperation.

[Won-seok Cho / Head of LG Uplus Device Development Center: To develop and test connected devices necessary to vitalize IOT applications, expensive equipment is needed. We are willing to offer free equipment to speed up the process of vitalization.]

A system that effectively manages this cooperation will be essential to maximizing synergy.

[Hyo-chan Bang / IOT Expert : Without a proactive approach to building security measures regarding the IOT, the technology can become a potential threat, rather than an opportunity.]

In our hyper-connected world, those threats become more and more real every day. But at the same time the number of opportunities is growing. In order for all market players to adapt to this new era they must be mindful of the need for cooperation as they focus on staying ahead of the competition.
