• demonized = 악마 취급을 받다, 오명을 쓰다

demonized에서 demon은 악마라는 의미로, 문장에서 demonized는 나쁘게 평가를 받다, 오명을 쓰다라는 의미로 활용되고 있습니다.

[I'm angry that smokers are being demonized. (흡연자들이 악마 취급을 받는 것을 보면 화가 난다.)]

[I thought Yellen was striking something of a populous tone there in those remarks. (옐런의 발언에서 포퓰리즘적 어조를 느꼈다.)]



• populous tone = populism = 대중주의

대중주의란 대중의 견해와 바람을 대변한다고 주장하는 정치적 형태를 말합니다. 일반 대중의 인기에만 영합하여 목적을 달성하려는 정치행태인데, 일반 대중을 호도하여 지지를 이끌어내는 것입니다. 경제 대통령이 포퓰리즘이 지나치면 이 역시 문제가 될 수 있습니다. 과연 옐런의 소통 방식이 어떤 식으로 진행되는지 지켜볼 필요가 있겠습니다.

I had a thought while I was watching Janet Yellen.

The Fed has not done a good job or not been able, through Chairman Ben Bernanke, to connect with the American public.

I thought Janet Yellen looked to me like maybe she has a chance to talk to the public and kind of explain what the Fed is doing and why they're doing it.

Over the course of the last five years, it's gone up and down but Fed has been variously demonized and a lot of bad press.

I don't know if that was Bernanke's fault or, perhaps, unavoidable.

I thought Yellen was striking something of a populous tone there in those remarks.
