CNBC 영상에 나온 영어 표현을 짚어보는 CNBC ENGLISH 시간입니다. 지난 금요일 나스닥 거래가 세시간 동안 중단됐었죠. 시장에 타격이 그렇게 크진 않았지만 나스닥 거래에 조심스러운 모습을 보여야 한다는 전문가의 의견이 있었습니다. 그러면서 다음과 같이 표현했습니다.

[I wouldn't touch that stock with a ten-foot pole. (그 주식에 관심없다. = 나스닥 주식 거래를 멀리하겠다.)]

• would not touch something with a ten-foot pole.
= 관심없다, 연관되어 있지 않다, 가까이 얼씬도 않다.

10피트짜리 장대로라도 건드리고 싶지 않다, 그만큼 관심이 없고 가까이 하기도 싫다는 의미입니다. 한편, 나스닥 거래 중단은 오류 때문인 것으로 판명이 났지만 당시에는 정확한 이유를 알 수가 없어 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

[Whether it's an integration issue between new platforms and old platforms, whether it's a fat finger problem, I don't know. (신-구 플랫폼의 통합 문제인지, 오류의 문제인지 나도 모른다.)]

• Fat Finger Problem = 실수, 오류

뚱뚱한 손가락이 전화기 버튼을 잘못 누를 경우가 많았습니다. 즉, 7번을 누르려고 했지만 7, 8번을 동시에 누르는 경우에 비유해 'Fat Finger Problem'을 실수, 오류라는 의미로 사용합니다.

The Nasdaq parent company didn't go down much, 3 to 4%.

That should have had a much bigger effect on that stock.

Had the stock dropped significantly, I would have bought it.

But in front of finding out exactly what happened today, I wouldn't touch that stock with a ten-foot pole.

This is really an indication that they don't have systems in place to protect the investors against outside occurrences. They haven't tested their systems properly.

Whether it's an integration issue between new platforms and old platforms, whether it's a fat finger problem, I don't know. But it seems to be a problem that's persisting and that they haven't addressed properly.

They can redress it with either a parallel system or by creating some redundancy in their hardware and software systems to pick up the slack, if these events occur again.

But they so far haven't addressed that, and they haven't addressed investor concerns that they are addressing it.
