■ KOREA LIFE - DMZ에 울려퍼지는 평화의 노래

이제 최근 DMZ 근처에서 열렸던 자, 이제 콘서트 현장으로 가실 텐데요. 이 날만큼은 남북이 긴장 관계가 아닌 평화의 메시지가 더 컸다고 합니다. 임리영 기자입니다.



지금으로부터 60년 전, 한국은 같은 민족끼리 서로 총을 겨누며 전쟁의 아픈 역사를 겪어야만 했습니다. 3년 1개월 간 계속되었던 한국 전쟁. 안타깝게도 일본에게 해방된 지 5년 만에 일어난 한국전쟁은 민족의 분열과 대립을 심화시켰는데요. 결국 남한과 북한 모두 약 150만 명의 사망자와 360만 명의 부상자를 낸 채 총성은 멈췄습니다. 미군 지휘관이 '더 이상 목표물이 남아 있지 않다'고 공언했을 정도로, 한국 전쟁은 남과 북, 모두에게 큰 상처를 남기고 정전에 돌입하게 된 것입니다.

올해는 정전 60주년을 기념해 다양한 행사들이 있었습니다. 한국전에 참전했던 세계 각국의 베테랑 병사들이 다시 한국을 찾아오기도 했죠. 최근 미 메릴랜드 주 국립문서보관소 창고에서 1950년 한국전쟁 당시 전해진 편지들이 공개되기도 했는데요. 이것을 보며 사람들은 더 자주 서로에게 이런 질문을 하게 됐습니다. 과연 평화는 언제 오는가 하고 말입니다.

남북한의 관계는 여전히 냉각기입니다. 남북한 경제 교류의 유일한 창구였던 개성공단은 문을 닫았고, 어렵게 마련된 남북당국회담 역시 돌연 취소되기도 했습니다. 대화의 창은 다시 닫혔고, 평화는 여전히 먼 이야기인 듯합니다.

하지만, 정전이 전쟁의 끝이 아니듯 평화를 바라는 마음 역시 포기할 수 없습니다. 김장훈씨 등을 비롯한 스타들은 이 평화에 가까이 가기 위해 노래를 부르고 캠페인을 계속하고 있습니다.



김장훈씨는 뉴욕에 독도가 한국땅임을 알리는 광고를 낼 정도로 활발한 활동가이자 애국자인데요. 그는 이번 정전 60주년을 맞아 비무장지대에서 평화를 기원하는 대규모 공연을 준비하고 있습니다.

[김장훈 / 가수, DMZ세계평화콘서트 총연출 : DMZ세계평화콘서트 총연출 바다에 포탄이 떨어져도, 이제 우리는 아주 무심하게 생각합니다. 하지만 외국에서는 우리나라가 마치 전쟁이라도 일어난 줄 압니다. 이번 공연에서 제가 정한 슬로건은 "총으로 지킨 평화, 이제는 노래로 지키자"입니다.]

특히 그는 꽃다운 나이에 전쟁에 참여한 소년병들에 집중한 다고 밝혔습니다. 소년병이란 6.25 전쟁 당시 정식 복무한 14∼17세의 군인을 의미합니다. 그 숫자는 무려 2만 9603명에 달했다고 하는데요. 이 중 7500여명만이 생존했습니다. 지난 2008년에서야 비로소 정부로부터 그 실체를 인정받았을 뿐이었습니다.김장훈씨는 잊혀진 병사들을 위해 향후 기부금을 조성하고, 소년병을 위한 기념비를 세우는데 쓰겠다는 계획도 가지고 있었습니다.

[김장훈 / 가수, DMZ세계평화콘서트 총연출 : 세팅을 삼일 동안 하고, 리허설도 삼일 동안 했어요. 가수들이 여러 명 출연하고, 각 가수들마다 특별한 연출이 있다 보니 참 어려워요. 그래서 아무리 국가적인 행사라 해도 두 번은 못할 것 같다는 생각이 들다가도 막상 사람들의 얼굴을 보니까 다시 할 수 있을 것 같아요. 멋진 공연이 될 거에요. 평화를 전 세계에 알릴 수 있을 겁니다.]

비스트와 f(x), 걸스데이와 같은 한류 아이돌 그룹과 많은 배우들이 DMZ세계평화콘서트를 위해 함께 모였습니다. 이들의 출연료는 소년병을 위한 사업에 모두 기부됩니다.

[걸스데이 / 가수 : 너무 뜻 깊은 공연입니다. 저희가 이런 공연에 함께 할 수 있다는 것 자체가 영광입니다. 모든 사람들이 음악을 사랑하듯 서로 사랑하게 되는 것이 세계 평화가 아닐까 생각합니다.]

저는 지금 비무장지대에서 7킬로미터 떨어진 평화 콘서트 현장에 와있습니다. 지금 이 곳에는 3만 명이 넘는 관중들이 평화와 함께 어우러지는 삶을 기원하며 노래를 따라 부르고 있습니다.

물론 이들은 대부분, 전쟁을 겪지 않은 전후 세대입니다. 하지만 오늘 공연의 중심이 되는 상징, 소년병들과 비슷한 나이인데요. 지금 이 곳의 젊은 세대가 전쟁과 평화를 기억하고 있는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 결국 전쟁의 아픔을 풀어나가고 미래의 평화를 지켜갈 것은 바로 이들, 젊은 세대이기 때문입니다.

[관람객 : 요즘 젊은 사람들은 전쟁이나 남북관계에 대해서 무관심하고 무감각한 것 같습니다. 나는 젊은이들이 이 콘서트를 통해 전쟁의 심각성과 평화의 소중함을 조금은 이해하기를 바랍니다.]

이렇게 평화를 전파하는 행사를 한다는 것에 국가적 자부심을 느끼는 사람도 있습니다.

[옥아찬 / 관람객 : 오프닝 영상을 보고 정말 놀랐어요. 우리나라가 전쟁 때문에 이렇게 참혹한 폐허가 됐었구나, 다른 나라의 도움을 받아야 할 정도로 가난했던 나라가 지금은 이렇게 평화로운 상태로 발전했구나. 생각하니까 뿌듯했어요.]

[백교훈 / 관람객 : 그래서 저희도 세계 평화에 동참하기 위해 유니세프에 정기적으로 기부를 하고 있어요.]

모두 함께 공연을 즐기는 가운데 김문수 경기도지사도 함께 했는데요. 그는 직접 콘서트 현장에 참석한 소년병들을 소개하기도 했습니다.

열정적으로 공연을 즐기는 젊은 세대 옆에서 함께 공연을 즐기는 전쟁세대도 역시 감회가 새롭습니다.

[김문수 / 경기도지사 : 여러분들, 오늘 이 자리에 소년병들이 참석했습니다. 소년병들, 일어나서 인사 한 번 해주시죠. 어르신들 다 팔순을 넘긴 나이입니다. 여러분, 박수를 부탁드립니다.]

김문수 경기도지사는 소년병들이 지킨 평화와 앞으로 우리가 지켜갈 평화의 중요성에 대해 다시 한 번 역설했는데요.

[김문수 / 경기도지사 : 바로 지금 철책을 지키는 대한민국 국군 장병들, UN군, 미군 모두 함께 이 노래를 불렀습니다. 이 노래가 북한에서 철책을 지키고 있는 군인들, 또 북한 주민들에게도 전달되었을 것이라고 생각합니다. 우리의 따뜻한 사랑의 마음이, 모든 세계 인류 평화로 이어질 것입니다. 그것이 통일을 가능하게 할 것입니다.]

뜨거웠던 콘서트의 마지막을 장식하기 위해 등장한 노신사 합창단. 이들은 실제로 전쟁을 경험했던 이른바 전쟁세대인데요. 전쟁을 몸소 기억하는 그들이 지금은 평화의 노래를 부릅니다. 총연출을 맡은 김장훈씨와 합창단, 소년병 그리고 관객들이 함께 아리랑을 부르면서 뜨거웠던 무대는 막을 내립니다.

[김형욱 / 합창단 단원 : 사실 이곳에서 얼마 떨어지지 않은 판문점 너머 북한 땅이 저의 고향입니다. 그래서 오늘 기분이 남다릅니다. 전쟁을 겪은 세대로서 이 콘서트에 참석해달라는 요청을 받았을 때, 저희 단원들 모두 너무 가슴 벅차고 기뻤습니다. 우리는 세대의 끝자락에 있습니다. 그리고 젊은 사람들은 세대의 중심에 있죠. 그들이 결국 통일을 이룰 것입니다. 저는 그들에게 부탁하고 싶습니다. 인내심을 가지고 평화를 지켜주기를 바랍니다.]

오늘 우리가 함께 부른 노래는 더 이상 상처가 생기지 않기를, 전쟁이 없기를 바라는 마음에서 비롯된 것입니다. 이렇게 모두 함께 바랐던 평화가, 저 멀리 북한에 있는 사람들에게도 잘 전달되었기를 바랍니다.

[Chaeri Kang / SBSCNBC : We are now taking you to the scenes of a concert that was recently held at the demilitarized zone but no worries. It's not only about tense inter-Korean relations there but more about peace. Here is our with the story.]

More than 60 years ago south korea was torn apart by a painful civil war that lasted just over 3 years. What was worse was this war was triggered just 5 years after korea claimed back its independence from japan's colonization.

By the end of the war, one and half million people were dead, 3.6 million injured. The us commander in chief famously said as a truce was declared - "there is no more target left". But the scars and divisions between the south and north remained.

This year, the korean peninsula marks 60 years since the truce, with many us veterans returning to visit the country and events such as the us national archives in maryland holding an exhibition of the public letters that were exchanged during the 1950 korean war. And the question increasingly being asked is - when will there be peace

The 2 koreas are technically still in a state of war. And even the Gae Song joint industrial complex, which was the last remaining gate to economic exchange and negotiations between the split nations has been shut down.  Numerous opportunities for bilateral summits have been cancelled and peace still seems unattainable.

But many are not giving up. Celebrities like kim jang-hoon continue to sing and campaign in the hopes of bringing peace one step closer. 

The singing star has always been an outspoken patriot - who even took out an advertisement in new york which said "dokdo is korea's territory

He is the driving force behind a massive peace concert recently held at the dmz to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the korean war.

[Kim jang hoon / singer : Even if a missile is launched into our sea no one takes it seriously here. but overseas, people think that we are at war the slogan i have come up with for this concert is "protect the peace we once achieved by guns, today by songs.]

He is especially focused on remembering the child soldiers that participated in these battles. Boys aged 14 to 17 were made to fight in these battles - more than 29 thousand such child soldiers were recruited and only 75 hundred of them survived.

But it was only in 2008 that they were officially recognized by the government. Kim jang hoon plans to gather donations for these forgotten young soldiers and wants to also build a monument for them.
  
[Kim jang hoon / singer : we rehearse for 3 days and because all the artists each have unique performances, it's very challenging to prepare this concert. So even if it's a national event - i feel like i won't be able to do this a second time. But when i actually see the light glow up in people's faces, it makes me want to do it again. It's going to be a fantastic concert and we'll be able to spread peace to the world.]

K-pop stars like beast, f(x), and girls day as well as actors .. All came together for this event, performing gratis in the name of peace.

[Girls day / k-pop band : this is a very meaningful concert and we are honored to be part of it. We think peace is loving one another like we love music.]

I am at the peace concert - happening just 7 kilometers away from the dmz. It's absolutely jam-packed with more than 30 thousand people singing along ...in hopes of promoting peace and harmony

Of course, most people here at the concert - are young, not knowing and not having experienced war. But they are of similar age to the children soldiers that are being remembered at the concert. And it’s the younger generation that are the center and the forefront of this event - because it will ultimately be their role not to repeat war and uphold peace for the future.

[audience : younger people are generally very insensitive and indifferent about war and the situation with north korea. I hope they understand the magnitude of the seriousness through these concerts and care more in the future]

There's also a sense of pride in these national efforts to promote peace.

[Ok ah-chan / concert audience : I was shocked by the opening video. Our country was in such rubble after the war and we were so poor we had to receive help from other countries. But it's become so peaceful.]

[Paik gyo-huh / concert audience : We are also donating money to organizations like unicef to promote peace around the world.]

The governor of gyeonggi province also jointed the event and introduced the child soldiers.

[Kim Mun-su/ Gyeonggi province governor : These child soldiers are here with us today. They are now in their eighties. Everyone please give them a round of applause.]

The governor highlighted the effort needed to ensure peace continues. Gyeonggi province governor

[Kim Mun-su / Gyeonggi province governor : All of us that protect this barbed wire fence..the korean soldiers, the us soldiers and the un soldiers sang this song together. We think this song will be heard by the north korean soldiers and citizens. We hope this warm message of love will be delivered to them. These prayers of world peace should also make reunification possible.]

The finale of the concert was a choir made up of korean war veterans - they sang about peace and the hope that the next generation will not have to go through what they did.

The concert then wrapped up in one voice- with kim jang hoon, the choir, the children soldiers and the audience all singing the korean traditional folk song "arirang"

[Kim hyung-wook / choir member : My hometown is not far from here. It's just across the border. When we were first asked to do a concert here as a generation that's experienced war, we were just thrilled. We stand at the end of one generation. Now it's the young generation that's at the center of it - and i hope they can accomplish reunification. Hold on to peace and protect it with perseverance.]

People have come together here in one voice hoping that there's no more scars to be left, and no more battles to be fought. Let's hope that message of peaces is delivered to the people up in north korea.
