여러분, 한 번 상상해 보십시오. 시속 300km로 달리는 고속철도 안에서 3DTV를 보고, 영화 한편을 단 9초 만에 다운로드 받는 상황을 말이죠. 이것은 멀지 않은 미래가 될 것 같습니다. 초고속 통신기술이 곧 현실화 될 전망이기 때문이죠. 한국의 연구진이 4세대 이동통신 시스템의 주요기술을 개발해 시제품 테스트에 나섰는데요. 결과는 성공적이었습니다. 그 기술력이 어느 정도인지, 또 우리 삶을 어떻게 바꿀 수 있을지 들여다보겠습니다. 함께 보시죠.

한국전자통신연구원, ETRI가 개발한 차세대 이동통신시스템 LTE-advanced다.

 

대용량의 데이터를 빠른 속로 전달할 수 있는 것이 이 기술의 핵심!

기존 외국 업체의 경우 모뎀기술 위주로만 시연이 진행된 반면, 저희 ETRI에서는 모뎀기술 뿐만 아니라 단말, 기지국, 핵심망을 모두 포함하는 전체 시스템에 대한 시연이 성공적으로 이루어졌습니다. 실내 및 실외 시연 모두 성공적이었죠. 세계 최초 기술이라 할 수 있습니다.

주행 중인 차안에서 3DTV를 본다고 믿기 힘들 정도로 화질이 선명하고 끊김 현상도 없습니다. 한국이 개발한 이 획기적인 4세대 이동통신 기술은 올해 초 세계 최초로 선을 보였습니다. 데이터 통화가 많은 스마트폰 보급이 증가하는 상황에 발표된 성과여서 더욱 주목을 받았습니다. 

 

한국의 경우 2009년 말 80만 명이던 스마트폰 가입자가 2011년 3월 1000만 명을 넘어섰다.

급증하는 데이터이용 수요는  통신장애와 휴대폰 끊김 현상까지 일으키고 있다. ETRI는 4세대 이동통신기술이 이와 같은 문제를 해결해 줄 것으로 기대하고 있다.

 

하지만 미국 유럽 일본 등 각국의 차세대 이동통신 개발 경쟁이 치열한 상황.

4세대 이동통신인 LTE-advanced는 3세대 대비 40배 이상 빠른 전송 속도로 초고속 멀티미디어 대용량 서비스가 가능합니다.

 

언제 어디서나 700MB짜리 영화 1편을 단 9초 만에 내려 받을 수 있고, 이동 중에도 다양한 대용량 멀티미디어 서비스를 이용할 수 있다는 게 특징이다.

지금 보고 계신 3D화면을 이동하는 버스 안에서도 고화질 그대로 볼 수 있습니다. 확인해 보죠.

마치 실물을 보는 듯, 선명하고 입체적인 3D 영상이 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. 끊김 현상도 거의 없다.
 

이 기술을 상용화하면 시속 300킬로미터 이상 달리는 KTX를 타고 가면서 3D 영화나 풀HD급 방송을 실시간 시청할 수 있게 될 전망이다.

 

IP기반의 영상전화서비스도 가능하다.

“3G 영상전화와 4G영상전화의 차이점은 무엇인가요?”

현재 사용하고 있는 3G영상전화는 큰 화면으로 볼 때 영상이 깨지거나 뭉그러지는 현상이 발생할 수 있습니다. 하지만 새로운 4G 시스템은 최대 4Mbps 데이터를 전송해서 HD급 영상통화가 가능합니다.”

 

개발된 LTE-Advanced 기술은 기존의 2G나 3G와도 연동이 가능하다.

 

글로벌로밍도 할 수 있어 기술 활용가능성이 크다.

 

ETRI는 세계최초로 4세대 이동통신 기술을 시제품 상태로 개발했다.

LTE-advanced을 진행하면서 저희는 세계적인 국제표준 기구인 3GPP 규격에 20여건 이상의 표준 IPR을 확보하였습니다. 올해부터 3년간의 준비 개발과정을 거쳐서 2014년쯤에는 상용화에 도래할 예정입니다.

 

ETRI는 오는 2021년까지 매출액 360조 원과 기술료 4천억 원이 넘을 것으로 예상하고 있다.

다양한 산업이 연계되어 있는 만큼 수혜를 입을 기업도 많을 전망이다.

삼성이나 LG 같은 기업들이 향후 단말기 생산에서 우위를 선점할 수 있는 기대효과가 있을 것으로 판단하고 있습니다. 전송속도가 빨라지면서 SBS 콘텐츠허브나 CJ ENM 등 큰 콘텐츠 업체들의 수혜가 예상됩니다. 또 이동통신회사들이 인프라 투자를 확대하면서 장비 업체들과 관련된 투자들도 많이 있을 것으로 보여 집니다. 올해보다는 내년에 특히 더 수혜를 받을 것으로 전망하고 있습니다.

한국은 세계 최초로 CDMA와 휴대인터넷인 와이브로, 그리고 LTE 기술에 이어 4세대와 5세대 이동통신 핵심 원천기술을 확보하게 됐는데요. 이번 기술개발로 한국이 차세대 모바일 산업의 주도권을 잡는데 유리한 고지를 차지할 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 기대됩니다.

Imagine you're travelling 300 kilometers per hour in a bullet train... and you're watching TV with your smart phone... in 3D. And you plan to download a movie... which takes less than 10 seconds. This is not from a distant future. This will be possible very soon... thanks to the 4G wireless technology. Well... Korea has a major role in this. It has developed a core component... and has recently succeeded in test running the system. Our first segment takes a closer look at major features of 4G service... and how it's going to change our lives.

 

This is the trial-run of a prototype for a new wireless system.

 

The LTE-advanced system made by ETRI - Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute which allows for transfer of large amounts of data at high speeds.

With the previous experiments done by foreign companies, it was a demonstration on technology based on modem devices. But at ETRI we have successfully run demos on not just modem technology but on terminal, base station, and on the overall system that forms the key network. That is why we call it the world's best.

You can watch this 3D TV on the go on this bus without much glitch at high definition and this was all possible because South Korea came up with the key technology to 4g service. And this is grabbing the world's attention as many more people use these smart phones that revive a lot of data messaging

 

In South Korea smart phone users topped 10 million in march, from a mere 800 thousand at the end of 2009.

 

That rapid acceleration has put a strain on networks, leading to poor mobile connections and interference.

ETRI hopes to solve those problems with its 4G prototype.

 

But the company is facing fierce competition from wireless technology developers in the US, Japan and Europe.

4G wireless network LTE advanced is a mass data multimedia service, which allows transmission that is 40 times faster than 3g services.

 

You'll be able to upload a 700 megabyte movie from the web in just 9 seconds, anytime, anywhere.

The second perk of this technology is the availability of high-quality multimedia services even on the go.

The quality is vivid and even a 3D show can be played on the move, with little break up.

 

When this technology is commercialized, 3D movies can even be played on mobile devices on bullet-trains running as fast as 300 kilometers per hour.

 

The technology will also allow for Internet Protocal based video telephony on the go.

“With the current 3g video telephone system the screen will break up when you enlarge it but with the new 4g system we can transmit maximum 4 mega BPS (bit per second) data, which allows such calls on high-definition”

 

This LTE-advanced technology also allows linking the service to the previous 2G and 3G networks. It also allows global roaming, making it more practical to use.

 

ETRI has been the first to prototype this technology in the world.

As we proceeded with our LTE Advanced technology we secured more than 20 standard IPR (INCHES PER REVOLUTION) that fit the world's applicable 3G MOBILE PHONE SYSTEM specification- 3rd generation party project. We are prepping this service to be commercialized from 2014.

 

the price tag OF THIS technology is expected to reach 400billion won but ETRI expects a revenue stream of 360 trillion won by 2021, generated by the many offshoots envisaged from this technology.

Samsung and LG are expected to be the front runners in producing these terminals. And as data transmission becomes faster companies that deal with mobile and TV content such as CJ ENM and SBS contents hub will piggyback on this. Mobile telcos can also gain substantially by investing in infrastructure and equipment makers. Next year is especially looking very strong.

South Korea was the founding father behind the world's first CDMA and wireless broadband service Wibro and even LTE as the nation spearheads this 4g service network and is prepping to gear up for fifth generation network.
